Dauphine Twin Smokey Quartz July 10, 2013 · 7 specimens An exciting new find of smokey Quartz from Malawi - but not from Mt. Malosa! These are from nearby Mulanje Mountain which is producing a similar suite of minerals as Mt. Malosa. Aside from the obvious high degree of quality of the crystals, much more so than what is seen from Mt. Malosa, the crystals are complex in form. I believed them to be Dauphine twins and showed them to noted Quartz experts Si and Ann Frazier who confirmed they were indeed Dauphine twins. Dauphine twins are penetration twins along the C-axis with a characteristic bevelled face in either the upper right or left corner of a prism face, as shown in the idealized figure and example below. |
